Meet Maria Valles…Our Expert Guacamole Gal
Maria Valles first came to Shady Brook Farm 19 years ago with her husband, Gabino, and six of her 11 children. Originally from Zacatecas, Mexico, Maria came to the United States to give her family more opportunities. When Maria arrived in the U.S. she didn’t know any English, but now speaks Spanish and English. Maria has 22 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and while some of them live at Shady Brook Farm, she enjoys going home to Mexico once a year to visit her family there. Maria and Gabino own a farm in Mexico where their two eldest children grow beans, and raise cow and pigs.
Shady Brook Farm is lucky to have Maria! Her homemade guacamole and pico de gallo are customer favorites. Maria makes them daily using authentic recipes passed down from her mother. She says both guac and salsa are special party foods in Mexico, just as they are in the U.S. During the busy season, Maria makes about 200 containers of guacamole a day. That is A LOT of avocados! Maria’s famous creations can be found fresh in the Farm Market every day.
Maria says her favorite part of living in the U.S. is her job. When not making guacamole and pico, Maria can be found around the market putting out produce and making sure everything is fresh. Stop by and say, “hola,” sometime!
